Cafe Luigi inspection report
If you are like me, then you grew up on the East Coast (Philly) and wished for great thin crust that you could get on every corner. Luigi's is that corner in Chicago. If you want classic large slices with a hit of sauce, if you want to fold your slice or if you just simply want some East Coast Classic Thin Crust.....you go to Luigi's.
When it comes to food, Chicagoans take two things very seriously: Hot dogs and pizza. I'll save the former for other brave souls, but for the latter, Chicago-style stuffed pizza is finally getting the national attention it so richly deserves, complete with a bastardized product from a major chain. I love it as much as the next man, but its sheer volume makes it a once in a while treat for me. I've always been much fonder of good thin crust pizza. However, when it comes to the Thin, Chicago has always suffered with that cracker-like, square-cut mess that seems like an afterthought at most of the better stuffed-pizza joints around town. That's why I love Cafe Luigi and its NY-style pie. First off, you can get it in slices, a rarity here. The slices are oversized, the kind that Travolta ate as he strolled down the Brooklyn streets in Saturday Night Fever, if you know what I mean. I like to fold mine over on itself lengthwise to get a better grip on it as I get a bite. Just a whisper of sauce accentuates the oregano and garlic flecked cheese. After the first bite, I have to check the back of my wrist to make sure that none of the grease has run down. Damn, I'm hungry!
